New Jersey Land Trust Network


   New Jersey Conservation Foundation is committed to promoting discussion,  

    networking and knowledge sharing among land trusts, grassroots groups and other

    nonprofits involved in land preservation and stewardship.

    The New Jersey Land Trust Network meets throughout the year for presentations         and discussions on various topics including policy, fundraising, mapping, membership     and board development, and best practices. The Land Trust Network is a program of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, supported by Victoria Foundation.

Forestry Health:  Management Considerations for Forested Land

Dr. Jay Kelly, Professor, Raritan Valley Community College  (pending)

Dr. Kelly will discuss his research on forest change and impacts to forest health resulting from overabundant deer, invasive plant species, and land use history, with implications for forest management and restoration.

New Tools in the War against Invasive Species

Dr. Michael Van Clef, New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team

Dr. Van Clef will describe the features of their phone app developed to identify and report invasive plants and animals, as well as their publicly available web data services and resources.

Deer Management:  Panel Discussion

Lauren Wasilauski , Montgomery Township

Dr. Michael Van Clef, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space

Jim Ferry, Animal Control Officer, Princeton Township

Dr. Van Clef will discuss research on deer management programs and impacts in the Hopewell Valley.  Ms. Wasilauski will share the features of the deer management program she manages for Montgomery Township.  Mr. Ferry will discuss his experience with contract deer hunters.  The audience will be invited to share challenges and strategies they employ to address deer control.

Dr. Robert Jordan, Wildlife biologist, Freehold Area Health Department

Dr. Jordan will discuss recent research results about ticks, including varieties emerging in NJ.  He will provide information about how to keep visitors as well as managers and stewards safe from health impacts.  He will also share messages to deliver to the public about these pests.

Natural Land Management in Urban Areas

Robert Rodriguez, Superintendent, Liberty State Park

Justin Dennis, Urban Parks Manager, NJ Conservation Foundation

Richard Lear, Director, Office of Parks and Recreation, Middlesex County

The presenters will discuss challenges and keys to success in managing natural lands in more populated areas.
