Delaware River Heritage Trail

Burlington and Mercer Counties

Delaware River Heritage Trail

Creating the Delaware River Heritage Trail

The Delaware River Heritage Trail (DRHT) project involves counties and municipalities along the Delaware River from Palmyra to Trenton. It is a vision for a 40+ mile greenway which would connect Delaware River towns along the corridor.  The foundation of this trail work will be Garden State Greenways, linking ecological hubs by way of a green infrastructure network.

Throughout the years, a number of organizations have worked on the DRHT and have established stakeholders, an alignment, and design guidelines for much of the trail. One significant portion of the trail, which is complete and open to the public, is Burlington City’s Riverfront Trail. Another portion of the DRHT in Bordentown is under construction. These sections of the route will serve as great examples of the benefit to municipalities with local linear trails.

While these local benefits are realized by some municipalities, New Jersey Conservation Foundation and other stakeholders are carrying the vision of a connected region that will become a regional tourist attraction as well as a local community asset. In addition to serving as a primary organizing advocate for the trail, New Jersey Conservation Foundation will assist organizations and government entities in taking the trail to the next stage.
